Emirates shelves plans for Durban service

JULY 8: THE rising price of fuel is behind Emirates’ decision to axe its daily service between Dubai and Alexandria in Egypt and shelf a planned new daily route between Dubai and Durban, South Africa, which was set to start in December.

The cancellation of the Durban route will be a blow to UK travellers because there are no direct flight options to the seaside city in Kwazulu-Natal.

An Emirates spokesman said: “Although demand to Durban was strong and the route well received, the high price of fuel has forced Emirates to evaluate its route operations ever more closely.”

Rory Pilkington, the bespoke operator’s managing director, said the increasing cost of fuel, food and finance has done little to diminish enthusiasm for a fabulous holiday.

Wine theme for NY/Virgin link

JULY 2: New York State Tourism has linked with Virgin Atlantic to promote the Empire State's wine regions - Finger Lakes, Long Island, Niagara Escarpment and the Hudson Valley - during the summer months.

The promotion is designed to increase the state’s brand awareness according to Thomas Ranese, chief marketing officer of the NY State Division of Tourism and to show what’s on offer ‘beyond the Big Apple’.

Through August, six New York State wines will be served to Upper Class passengers in Virgin Atlantic’s Heathrow Clubhouse; a four-page Getaway Guide will be carried in the seat back of every flight in July which will aim to drive people to iloveny.com/wine; print ads will appear in Seatback magazine; and a 30 second  King Kong TV spot will be one of the first spots on every Virgin Atlantic flight.

According to Thomas Ranese, “the British think of New York and love it but we’re giving them additional reasons to love New York and to find things to do on a trip, visiting places like the Hudson Valley, the Catskills, Niagara Escarpment or Long Island for example.”

“Virgin Atlantic is a great partner and we hope to work with them on other themes and we also hope to create more themed packages with tour operators.”

New York State has more than 240 wineries.

Brochures don’t stack up for Jetset

JUNE 30: JETSET is celebrating its 40th anniversary by becoming the first major tour operator to abandon printed brochures and drive all business online.

The move is designed to save resources but is supported by the launch of a new travel agents guide to support retailers booking through the online system.

Chairman John Bond said: “The problem of brochure wastage won’t go away, and both agents and their customers are demanding an end to the tons of unwanted paper that pile up every year.

“Brochures have always represented only a small proportion of our product range and prices are out-of-date as soon as they are printed. Today’s web-savvy agents are more than happy to create holidays online, so continuing to produce consumer brochures just doesn’t stack up. We are however producing the Worldwide Travel Guide for agents to guide them through the sales process,” added Bond.

Agents can use the system to book virtually all scheduled airlines plus 5,000 hotels worldwide. Prices are set to reflect 10 per cent commission, but can be varied between none and 30 per cent according to market conditions. Agents can also book 5,000 hotels worldwide. Also at variable commission, and a full dynamic packaging system will be available later this year.”
