Layana Resort and Spa, Koh Lanta, Thailand
THE BACKGROUND: This five-star 50-room adults-only boutique resort opened five years ago after a couple fell in love with the island when holidaying there and decided to buy some land and open a business. They have created a welcoming and tranquil environment that is evident from the moment you arrive. The manager, Michael Vogt, considers it his duty to try to welcome every arriving guest.
WHERE IS IT? On the west coast of Koh Lanta Yai at Phra-Ae (Long Beach), Layana can arrange surface transportation to and from any point in Phuket, Phangna and Trang provinces. Arrivals at Krabi airport can take advantage of a speedboat transfer (November to April). This consists of a 50-minute drive from Krabi airport to Baan Hua Hin pier and then a 20-minute scenic ride along the coast of Koh Lanta on Layana's private boat.
THE ROOM: Our Garden Pavilion room, designed in a contemporary and bright Thai style, was located on the first floor in one of the two-storey units, each with four guestrooms. A balcony offers a breathtaking view of the mountain and immaculate landscaped gardens. The room had a natural, bright and luxurious feel. The marble bathroom has a deep-sunken bath. There’s a chaise lounge and all rooms are fitted with DVD players and have free wireless internet connection.
THE FACILITIES: You can relax on a sunlounger facing the beach, where you just have to press a button for instant service, or spend time in the library that’s stocked with books, magazines, newspapers and has internet access. Or join one of many watersports or sightseeing tours. Treatments in the Linger Longer Spa take place against a backdrop of gorgeous aromas and relaxing music.
HIGHLIGHT: Stepping off the boat to be welcomed with flower garlands ensures your first experience of Layana leaves you feeling like a celebrity. Although you can get very cheap massages in Thailand, it is it is well worth splashing out to enjoy the type of luxurious experience offered by the Layana’s Linger Longer Spa.
RECOMMEND TO: It’s an adults only resort and is for couples and singles looking to experience Thailand in a luxurious and peaceful environment.

Layana does everything possible to make sure guests have a memorable time. The Layana motto is 'Have a break, Have a pause' – I did and will definitely be going back to do it again.
