THE BACKGROUND: One of New york’s long-established West side city centre hotels which has recently enjoyed a complete makeover to the rooms and public areas.
WHERE IS IT? On its own 'private' corner right on Broadway and perfectly placed beside the Lincoln Center, the epitome of New york’s high culture with everything from ballet to jazz and opera to symphonies. (New york’s Fashion Week will be held in the Lincoln Center for the first time this coming September 10-18, 2010). It’s also across the road from the lower end of Central Park and right next door to a branch of New york institution, P.J. Clarke’s, which is a great place to eat or drink like a New yorker!
THE ROOM: Small but perfectly formed and now completely modernised. Amenities include two double beds with a single rose on the bedside table, a leather-topped desk, a tempting tray of fine wines (from $23) and snacks. There’s a 32in flat screen TV with movies and TV, i-pod docking station with speakers and complimentary high-speed internet access. Two huge mirrors, safe, mini-bar and armchair complete the room. The compact bathroom includes a range of luxury cosmestic amenities and a bathrobe. An iron and ironing baord is available in all guest rooms.
THE HOTEL: The Empire offers 370 rooms and 50 suites on 11 floors with a full concierge service. Children up to 13 years can stay free of charge. Check-in time is 15.00 and check-out time is 12.00
THE RESTAURANT: Ed’s Chowder House is next door but with access from the hotel. Breakfast and dinner is served here. There’s also a funky yet romantic hotel lobby bar which is a great place for a pre- or post-dinner drink.
THE FACILITIES: One of the boutique hotel’s unique selling points is its 12th floor rooftop pool deck, including Jacuzzi, which is open from May until September, a great summertime attraction. Private cabanas can be rented featuring flat screen TVs, mini refrigerators, iPod docking stations with speakers, ceiling fans and daybeds. The NyC pool deck menu offers food and beverage options as well as spa services. There’s a beauty and fitness centre plus tennis and golf nearby. Wireless internet is available in the public areas and there's also a public internet PC for guest use.
THE COST: Rates at the Empire range from $309 in August and from $459 in the autumn (2010).

New york might have thousands of hotel rooms and suites but one of the Empire’s is an ideal base for a New york City holiday or business stay. Access to everywhere in Manhattan is easy from here.
